This year's Marching Panther Band saw about 174 students on the field, including 38 or so in the Guard and 5 majorettes. The marching band performs at all regular season football games, weather permitting, as well as Friday pep rallies, parades, and the Fantasy of Trees. Marching and musical excellence is our goal in participating in three or four competitions during the fall. Freshmen through seniors are eligible. Requirements include attendance at summer band camp, memorization of music, and listening to your directors.
Concert and Symphonic Bands
The Concert and Symphonic ensembles perform music that is technical and artistic for concerts as well as competitions. The Symphonic band is made up of more advanced students chosen by Mr. Shaw and generally plays more difficult pieces.
This ensemble is made up, obviously, of freshman band members. The level of music they are exposed to will be challenging enough to push students to excell, yet easy enough for them to enjoy.
This is an auditioned group of players that practice on their own with Mr. Shaw's assistance for the high school group and for the Middle School. They peform traditional jazz and swing tunes and will expand their musical abilities through exposure to new techniques and knowledge of this type of music. In addition to short performances at regular band concerts, the Powell Jazz Bands has a spring concert to raise funds for the band programs.
