Spring Message #2

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Please accept my apologies for not being at tonight's meeting. Tonight is a very important meeting and I need you to know that my band director responsibilities are the reason I am not there tonight. I chose not to cancel the meeting because of the upcoming meetings with the school board.

As the band director of the Powell High Band I feel it is my duty to inform you of the affects that the current rezoning proposal would have on the band. At present we would instantly lose 30-40 students in the band. The devastating part comes at the middle school. We have estimated losing 25%- 35% of incoming freshmen. If the zones go through as proposed many Powell Middle Band students would be going to Karns High School and Central High School. We would be gaining students from Northwest Middle School, but because of the number of schools being fed by their band program I feel that we would only see 2-3 band students from Northwest each year. In essence we would be sending several to other schools while gaining very few. We are building this band program in hopes of reaching the 200 member mark in just 2-3 years. If this plan goes through I believe that the band will decrease in size drastically.

It greatly concerns me the affect this will have on the band as well as our school. There are students that live ½ mile from their current school that will have to drive as many as 10 miles to get to their school. I do not understand the logic. I ask you to fight this with all your might.

Sincerely,

Spence Milligan PHS Director of Bands

Tom's Gravatar As a former PHS Band member, and 2001 Powell graduate, it is very unfortunate to see the changes that Knox County has proposed (and will likely put into effect) for rezoning in 2008. When I returned to Knoxville after attending college at Ohio State, I was reminded just how great the Powell community is. This played a large role in my decision to return to Knoxville, work here, and raise a family here. Although my sister and I are both out of college and would not have been affected personally by the rezoning, these changes would have had an effect on the community and the band as a whole while we were band members. My family will continue to fight for this community, and I will continue to give back to the band whenever possible, no matter what happens as a result of the rezoning. As always, go Panthers and go Buckeyes!
